Marathon Day
Heavitree Bowls Club
Tuesday 17th June was Marathon Day. The brainchild of Rob French, this was a marathon day of bowling to raise funds both for the club and for a local charity. The date was set to coincide with the period of longest daylight with bowling taking place continuously from 8 o'clock in the morning to 8 o'clock in the evening.
At 8 o'clock, Club President Brian Parker bowled the first bowl and a steadily increasing stream of bowlers arrived to play, paying a suitable sum for the privilege of playing, and to enjoy the array of bacon rolls, pasties, home made pizza and cakes. The catering was brilliantly coordinated by Liz French with great help from Pauline Jury and Lyn Martin.
We were delighted to welcome friends, bowlers from other clubs and also our local Councillor, Lucy Haigh, who joined in and showed considerable skill when playing the game for the first time.
The day was brought to a close at 8pm, largely by a group of our working bowlers who were only able to join at the end of their working days. It ended a memorable day for the club.
